How often do you just make something without any sort of notion of what its suppose to be, or without any type of conceptual concerns. I remember reading that Duchamp would make dates for himself to go out onto the streets to find random objects and turn them into art. Lots of these objects were passed onto friends. I think this kind of practice is really healthy for the artist. Just pure, unedited, creative energy. There's another artist by the name of Billy Childish, who's also a musician, who once said,"Never Edit Yourself". How often do you stop yourself dead in your tracks because you do, in fact, edit yourself?
Here's Mr. Childish performing a lovely tune by the title, "Youngblood". I think this song embodies exactly what I was just talkin about. Here's the lyrics,
Damn Your Fucking World (repeat)
chorus
I Wanna Be
A Youngblood
We Thought Disco Was Fucking Dead(repeat)
But Now Its Back Inside my Head
chorus
I Wanna Be
A Youngblood
Damn Your Fucking World(repeat)
I Wanna Be
A Youngblood
Simple, straight-forward, no bull-shit.
